Sun Balm

Our Sun Balm is formulated with nourishing tallow and the sweet summer smells of coconut oil. We add beeswax for a waterproofing agent and some arrowroot powder to help the feel be less greasy. With over 20% of the formula as zinc oxide, Soma & Aretz Sun Balm can help you stay safe in the sun! Please reapply often, especially if sweating or swimming. 

Most conventional sunscreens use toxic chemicals that are shown to be endocrine disrupters and carcinogenic (linked to cancer). These chemicals absorb into the bloodstream and are detected in blood tests weeks after using them.

Mineral sunscreens are found to be a safe alternative especially when non-nano particles are used. This means that the particles of minerals (zinc oxide) use are too large to be absorbed by the skin. They sit on top of the skin providing physical protection from the sun.

The problem with many mineral sunscreens on the market is that they are mixed with inflammatory oils (high in polyunsaturated fats) that oxidize with heat. Oxidation means cell death (and is why we love antioxidants!). Rubbing a vegetable or seed oil on your skin which is already warm and then going out in the sun can be just as harmful as using a chemical sunscreen!

This is why we suggest using only chemically stable (saturated) fats. Tallow has a very strong double bonded molecule which means it can withstand heat from your body AND the sun- nourishing and moisturizing your skin while providing sun protection. We advocate safe sun exposure: small amounts of unprotected sun for vitamin D, layers of coverage with clothing or shade, and then tallow sunscreen if you know you have to be out in the sun without other protection for extended periods of time!
